“In the United States things have changed a lot, and it’s hard to beget respectable puny films now. The avaricious studios couldn’t care less about safe films.”–Woody Allen.

Woody Allen has said that European audiences are more receptive to his films these days than American audiences. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) is his fourth European movie, and in many ways his most French film yet. Site in Avilés, Barcelona, and Oviedo, Vicky Cristina Barcelona follows Allen’s London films, Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Cassandra’s Dream (2007) . It stars Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), Javier Bardem (No Country for Obsolete Men), Patricia Clarkson, and Penélope Cruz (Volver), and tells the myth of a lovers’ threesome. Shortly after arriving in Barcelona on vacation, two young American women in their 20s, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Johansson), are invited by a smooth-talking artist, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) to consume a weekend in Oviedo, drinking wine and making care for with him. Because she is engaged to be married, pragmatic Vicky is reluctant at first. Cristina, however, is commence to the seduction. The two women obtain Juan Antonio’s proposal, and accompany him to Oviedo, where they soon view the painter has a thing for his resplendent, but emotionally unstable estranged-wife, María Elena (Cruz) . After Juan and Vicky drink wine and do like, Cristina, Juan, and María Elena soon accept themselves living together. It becomes evident to Cristina that Juan Antonio and María Elena are detached madly in care for with each other. Bardem and Cruz bring a chemistry to the conceal that sizzles. Ultimately, the film then becomes a appealing Woody Allen meets Éric Rohmer (Eric Rohmer’s Six Lawful Tales - Criterion Collection) meets Pedro Almodóvar (Volver) exploration of the dynamics of this sexually free-spirited lovers’ threesome, contrasted by Vicky’s more customary relationship with her expressionless, Unusual York buttoned-down care for interest, Doug (Chris Messina) . Fair as Manhattan was central to Manhattan, Barcelona features prominantly in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, especially Gaudí’s Park Güell. Remarkable like a gracious French film, this shining movie ends on a notice that is both poignant and shadowy, with everyone a minute wiser in the demolish. Once the celluloid care for poet of Manhattan, with Vicky Cristina Barcelona Allen reveals he is great wiser now when it comes to the ways of the heart. It is “a very shaded film” (as Allen calls it) only because of the message it sends about relationships. Some couples decide for convention rather than the madness of sincere care for. Others, like Juan Antonio and Maria Elena, experience precise esteem with the level of chemistry we might call “soulmates,” only to procure they cannot live together. To expend an archaic cliche, Juan Antonio can’t live with Maria Elena, but can’t live without her. Allen seems to suggest that all we can really hope for in the waste, after stumbling around in any relationship, is a shrimp wisdom. Dare I say that this is Woody Allen’s best work since Hannah and Her Sisters? Unlike that film, however, this is a really trustworthy film Allen could have never made in Hollywood, which generally prefers feel-good esteem stories with happily-ever-after endings.

12/05/08 Update: Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Jarvier Bardem, Rebecca Hall, and Penélope Cruz all received nods for Golden Globe Awards this week.

G. Merritt

In “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Woody Allen begs to contradict another pundit of his age, Mick Jagger. Woody demonstrates in his latest movie that you can’t EVER win what you want, and you also can’t gather what you need. He demonstrates this in the anecdote of how Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), two magnificent young Americans staying in Barcelona for a few months, react to the romantic overtures of the dashing, primally sexy artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) . Vicky–a master’s candidate in “Catalan identity,” although she is not Catalan and barely speaks Catalan or even Spanish–finds that sex with Juan Antonio shakes up her previously solid feelings for her dullish American fiance, Doug (Chris Messina) . Cristina–a dilettantish photographer/filmmaker who is defined by the fact that she only knows what she DOESN’T want in a relationship with a man–finds greater satisfaction with Juan Antonio, at least until Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), Juan Antonio’s volatile, insanely jealous ex-wife, shows up.

Some critics have opined that “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a hackneyed blast at naive Americans left at sea by European sexual sophistication. However, I contemplate it’s more a delineation of Woody’s basic plan that happiness in fancy is transitory at best. How can you possibly absorb up Juan Antonio and Maria Elena–who are constantly at each other’s throats, to the point that Maria Elena brandishes knives and guns–as an example of sexual sophistication? They can’t live with each other, they can’t live without each other, but she may kill up killing him, herself, and a few innocent bystanders. As enacted in a scintillating performance by Cruz, Maria Elena embodies the eternal irrationality of fancy, a blind craziness that–at least in Woody’s view–stamps an irrevocable expiration date on even the tenderest, most ardent esteem.

Not quite a comedy but certainly not a tragedy, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a rueful commentary on the constant dissatisfactions of like and life, made all the more bittersweet by the heartbreakingly elegant scenes of Barcelona and Catalunya wrapped in golden light by photographer Javier Aguirresarobe. The film offers us multiple pleasures–not least the generous performances–yet, in the slay, it feels puny. There are too many of Woody’s familiar tropes for us to select the film at face value, especially the overly familiar characters; personally, I’m tired of the fair, nubile young “Woody women” who are drawn vaguely toward a career in the arts yet are completely confused about everything except their need for hot sex. And, yes, Woody, we got the point decades ago that you assume life and the Universe meaningless; why do you always have to have one character in every movie (in this case, Juan Antonio) whisper that understanding baldly? “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is worth seeing, but it falls short of being one of Woody’s masterpieces.

I agree with fair about everyone else who has reviewed this DVD, how can the people who edited this nick out the BEST performance of the concert which was Extreme’s medley of Queen songs. I thank my lucky stars I serene have it on tape from when MTV first aired the concert 10 years ago. It’s my accepted piece of the prove and by far one of the coolest moments. The band, most especially Gary Cherone, payed tribute to Freddie and Queen in the best scheme I’ve ever seen. The medley of songs were performed with such excitment and the audience loved them. So did I :) This DVD fair starts the concert with Joe Elliott doing Tie Your Mother Down, that’s like the middle of the explain! There were several performances chop out mainly Metallica, Guns ‘N Roses, Def Leppard, and the above mentioned Obscene. This DVD needs to be re-issued in it’s entirety. I did, however, like those Freddie segments included on the dvd that were shown to the audience during intermission. Those were really wintry. Gigantic concert but not shown to it’s fullest potential on this dvd and that’s a sincere shame. QUEEN AND FREDDIE deserve more…and so do the fans :)

Like some of the other reviewers, I am lucky to have the VHS version of the concert. Enjoy it or not, the VHS version is mighty better than the DVD version….The DVD version has only half of the concert…..i worship the first half of the concert, but its not included on the dvd. The whole dvd would have been scrumptious if the ENTIRE concert was on it :-(

Jean Negulesco was an also-ran among golden-age directors, but he fired on all cylinders in this late-forties piney-woods noir. Richard Widmark is a giggling psycho who owns, what else, a Road House somewhere come the Canadian Border; Cornel Wilde is his all-American man Friday. Into the mix comes Lupino, a tough “shantoozie” who becomes the apex of a sick triangle. The talk is hard-boiled and freighted with innuendo (in the style of the times) . Worth the imprint of admission is Lupino singing “One more for my baby (and one more for the road) ” in her burnt-toast stammer, while sitting at a white piano gouged with burns from her smouldering cigarettes. This movie was made for viewing on the slow, tedious present.

ROAD HOUSE sets a shadowy mood with plenty of night scenes. I’m usually turned away from a film having too many night scenes. Half the time you can’t inform who’s who and what’s they doing. Nothing unclear in ROAD HOUSE. Director, Jean Negulesco, deserves a gold star for handling the lighting in those scenes. I give another gold star to Celeste Holm, the girl that you want for a “friend.” The station gets down to the simply fact of the mating season. I was a slight concerned that Widmark’s nasty propensity wasn’t foreshadowed during the earlier stages of the film, but it was acceptable to beget that he unprejudiced flipped his cork. The best portion of the movie was perky Ida Lupino’s torch song singing difficulty beginning with “Area ‘em up Joe,” and “Again.” The soundtrack was proper.

Rock & Rule is truly one of the greatest undiscovered gems of early 80’s animation. Barely being released in theaters and having puny TV and video releases, not too many people had the chance to really notice this masterpiece. Taking more than a few years to form, and more than 200 people working around the clock on the project, it was truly a labor of fancy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rock and Rule! Click Here

This original 2-Disc Collector’s Edition is a very nice situation, however you peer at it. You can teach that noteworthy time and care went into this one. Packed with a fresh Anamorphic 16X9 Widescreen transfer and a jaw-dropping Dolby 5.1 remix, Rock & Rule has never looked and sounded better! The package is a custom box with a pullout gatefold digi-case, and exceptional artwork on all sides.

Now let’s talk about the extras on the first disc, which is also available as the cheaper stand alone single DVD release of Rock & Rule. An audio commentary with Director Clive A. Smith is well worth listening in on, you’ll learn tons and never earn bored. A 22+ cramped vintage making-of featurette also reveals many facts concerning the production of Rock & Rule. A short restoration comparison is included, where you can peep unbiased how expansive this unusual DVD transfer looks! Lastly is an extensive stills gallery of pre-production sketches.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rock and Rule! Click Here

Now let’s talk about the special features on the 2nd disc, only available in the 2-Disc Collector’s Edition. A nice collector’s booklet is included featuring various interviews, artwork and photos. Perhaps the accurate gem is the alternate Canadian version of Rock & Rule presented here in fullscreen format. The main differences are that a different actor was musty to advise Omar, worthy of the dialogue is more risque, and it runs a few minutes longer in the credits. The new negatives for this version were lost in a fire and the best remaining print source was primitive, so the quality is sometimes not too stout and has imperfections, yet it’s well worth watching. Also included is “The Devil And Daniel Mouse”, an earlier half-hour animation fragment, which was the inspiration for Rock & Rule. Next is another lengthy making-of featurette about the production of “The Devil And Daniel Mouse”. Next we have a 12+ itsy-bitsy workprint version of the waste of Rock & Rule with various scenes in rough do. There’s also a short workprint title sequence containing the alternate “Ring Of Power” title name of Rock & Rule. Included are two trailers, one being for Rock & Rule. Another extensive stills gallery is included again on this disc. Lastly, if you have a DVD-ROM drive on your computer you can pop this disc in and plan the unique script for Rock & Rule in Adobe PDF format.

Did I forget to mention the soundtrack? With performances by Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry and Earth Wind And Fire…every song is simply marvelous and stays in your head long after the movie ends. It’s a accurate shame that this never got a fat soundtrack release, since the music does for Rock & Rule what the awesome animation visuals do for the atmosphere of the film. And the effective synth procure by composer Patricia Cullen (who sadly passed away) works perfectly and is often very creepy.

Even if you never had the chance to scrutinize Rock & Rule before, you almost can’t go unpleasant if you devour other early 80’s animation films like Heavy Metal and American Pop.

Set in the future where man has destroyed himself, the only survivors were rats, cats and dogs that have mutated into humanoid beings. An aging rocker named “Mok” has plans to lift over the world using an experiment to bring a demon from another dimension by using a special sigh, he kidnaps a delicate singer named “Angel” to consume her teach, but only Omar ( her boyfriend) and friends must terminate Mok before it’s too gradual.

A aesthetic, absorbing and well made intelligent Sci-fi fantasy rock opera with the music of Debroah Harry, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Earth Wind and Fire and Cheap Trick. The Animation is what i call spectacular even on the characters, there’s a fairly decent set but level-headed this is a very impressive underrated cult spicy flick that will now have it’s audience thanks to DVD, that Angel is a total knockout.

The 2-Disc residence includes the American version with huge pictre & sound quality and the alternate Canadian version with a different protest track for “Omar” some omitted scenes and a alternate ending. There’s also commentary by the director Clive Smith, gradual the scenes, the Nelvana short ” The Devil and Daniel Mouse” with unhurried the scenes of that short, trailer to “Rock & Rule”, collected gallery, collectable booklet, and conceptual art.

A highly recommended movie and a highly recommended DVD for lovers of animation, Sci-fi, fantasy and rock.

Also recommended: Heavy Metal, American Pop, The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Total Prefer, Wizards, The Dusky Cauldron, Fire & Ice, Hey Helpful Looking!, Robin Hood (Disney), Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Metropolis ( both 1927 and 2001 versions), Princess Mononoke, The Shaded Crystal, The Wizard of Oz, Adore Planet.

Take “The Incandescent” and the better parts of “The Blair Witch Project,” let them go k-i-s-s-i-n-g up in a tree, and “Session 9″ is what you’ll come by. I can’t say enough satisfactory things about this movie. It’s the best-made, most atmospheric, genuinely creepiest scare movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s the kind of movie that restores your faith in a whole genre, making up for every poor teen scare film and mindless sequel you might’ve sat through in the last few years. What can I say? “Session 9″ is the fleck of gold you hope against hope to come by luminous amid the broken rocks and sand at the bottom of your pan.

Directed by Brad Anderson (”Next End Wonderland”), “Session 9″ tells the legend of a team of six asbestos abatement workers hired to shapely out in one week’s time the deserted Danvers Mental Hospital in Massachusettes. The film was shot onsite in the historic red-bricked monster of a building once known as the Danvers Lunatic Asylum. There’s no shortage of creepy atmosphere at hand, and the film-makers expend it to their purpose, slowly bringing to boil a account of escalating interpersonal frictions and dizzying madness.

“Session 9″ works on many levels. On the surface, it’s a taught thriller, offering more than a few jump-out-of-your seat scares; it’s also an inspiring character examine of six men thrown together under high-pressure conditions. The acting is all expedient, but Peter Mullen and David Caruso are particularly worthy as the boss and foreman of the asbestos team. At its heart, “Session 9″ is a compelling psychology tapestry, woven together from afraid voices, spooky sounds, and rich visual metaphor.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Session 9! Click Here

From the opening scenes where the team tours the massive building, it’s comely certain that Brad Anderson didn’t miss the day in film school when they studied Stanley Kubrick. The prominence of dull, wide tracking shots, ironic daylight, and place-as-character motifs are all strongly reminiscent of The Knowing.” So is distinguished of the storyline. But “Session 9″ is more than impartial a “Shiny” knock-off. It slowly builds its gain character and atmosphere, managing to do something modern, unusual, and truly scary. If you’re a fan of tall terror films and have begun to pains that they don’t even try to form them anymore, please gape “Session 9.”

The Danvers Mental Hospital is a Loyal, honest-to-goodness asylum in Massachusetts that pioneered and perfected the frontal lobotomy. Built in the 1850’s and closed in the mid-1980’s due to lack of region funding, this movie is filmed entirely(camcorder style) in the once crowded (with over 2500 patients) & aloof to this day, horribly irascible asylum. I must say, that the undisputed STAR OF THIS FILM is the ASYLUM, itself. The cast does a better than average job in delivering proper characters, however…

A group of Hazmat workers are hired to conclude the task of asbestos removal in the colossal hospital. Gordon, the crew boss, promises that the job will be finished in 7 days. Each crew member will receive 10 Stout as a bonus once they meet the deadline, which, no matter how many eerie, queer & unexplained things initiate to happen in the asylum and to the workers, the promise of the money keeps them all to their appointed task.

This movie is filmed very effectively a la Stanley Kubrick’s “The Lustrous” style. That is to say, each day of the week is stated, a shot of the asylum is shown & then the day is filmed. This is a frequently outmoded tactic that screenwriters/directors employ to develop a sense of foreboding, and BOY, DOES IT EVER WORK in this film. Broad cinematography & a really frighteningly unfamiliar musical catch befriend to fabricate the sense of inducing madness that this film makes you feel. It also has borrowings of “The Sixth Sense” inasmuch, clues are given throughout the film so that you may figure out for yourself, (if you are paying end attention) what oddities and malevolent forces are at work in the asylum & in the situation. You will experience what REALLY “Lives in the Venerable and Wounded…” I guarantee it!

Make no mistake about it… a foodie isn’t honest someone who loves great food; a foodie is someone who finds eating an adventure and is always searching for entirely current food experiences (which is why The Food Network is the antithesis of everything foodie. They should objective change their name to the Comfort Food Network - not that I have anything against comfort foods but there is a whole world of foods outside of the American diner experience!) . Outside of The Iron Chef, Tony Bourdain’s ‘No Reservations’ and Impress Bittman’s ‘Best Recipes in the World’, there’s very cramped TV-wise to stimulate us foodies, so this Astonishing gem that impartial popped from heaven like a truffle on your pillow really is nirvana. It’s Gourmet Magazine ‘live’ with all the sights and sounds and yes, even the smells and tastes. It also crams in a global experience that subtly underlines the fact that food is a language and an experience that all cultures can allotment together and bond with. There are only two special features on this DVD, and they both belong to Pam Grier. And that’s reason enough to acquire it! She has two nude scenes in this lackluster blaxploitation thriller that largely fails to thrill, and her sparkle is the only spark here. A valid cast, including Jim Backus, Earha Kitt, Carl Weathers, Scatman Crothers, and Yaphet Kotto, is wasted here, but they try their best with what they’re given. The movie is in widescreen and the image quality is good. There’s the movie trailer and a scene and language selector, and that’s it. For `70s blaxploitation genre fans and Pam Grier fans only, but that’s quite a substantial audience!

“Friday Foster” is a light-hearted concern, not as violent or sexual as “Coffy” or “Foxy Brown” but is quiet appetizing. As the title character, Grier plays a photo journalist for a fashion magazine who stumbles onto an assasination attempt on a prominent sunless politician. Following her nose, she discovers a larger conspiracy out to eliminate other dark politicans. Quiet perfectly of the 1970’s, it has its allotment of violence, including an unintentionally hilarious rooftop gun fight between Yaphet Kotto and Carl Weathers. Pam Grier calm contributes her obligatory nude scenes, one in a shower, one in a jacuzzi, and of course one in a bed. Comedian Godfrey Cambridge has an spirited role as a glad club owner, and Ted Lange from “The Worship Boat” makes a silly cameo as a sweet-talking pimp. Other blaxploitation regulars appear throughout the film as well.

“Coffy” and “Foxy Brown” peaceful remain the ultimate Pam Grier films, but this one mild stands sizable with it’s blaxploitation culture (”She’s unbiased all woman”, “Damn I need a beer!”) . “Friday Foster” is a first-rate addition for the hardcore fans.

Alas, George Maharis, after giving us two and a half seasons worth of Emmy-caliber performances as Buz Murdock, has hit the road. Or rather, he’s “unhit” the road, leaving his less flashy but more estimable co-star Martin Milner to go it alone. Yes, Buz is gone for trustworthy, never to be so worthy as referred to on camouflage again. And if you’re a Maharis/Buz fan who fair can’t stand the conception of Route 66 without your popular character, perhaps you’d do well to discontinuance your collection after Season Three, Volume One. Those of you who do determine to stick along for the rest of the wander, you’ll be rewarded with many more memorable moments aloof ahead on the toddle.

Season three of Route 66 was marked by a turbulent upheaval such as few television programs have to suffer. It actually seems almost like three completely different seasons in one - first there was the indicate we’d near to know and fancy, featuring Tod and Buz in some of their greatest moments. Then the abrupt departure of Maharis, leaving Tod to go it alone. And then the final third portion of the season, in which Tod meets Lincoln Case and a unique partnership develops with a unique position of adventures.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Route 66: Season Three, Vol. 2! Click Here

Each one of those three parts of season three of Route 66 had its hold separate dynamic. Stage One was the classic Route 66 we’ve reach to quiz, a polished program which had settled into and was thriving in its format and the rapport between its two leads, turning out some of its best episodes such as “Man Out of Time” or “Ever Hasten the Waves in Oklahoma? “. The sudden departure of Maharis brought that to a skidding discontinuance. Then came stage two, in which Tod wandered the road alone, the expose becoming more and more like a estimable anthology series as Milner’s character, as well-developed as it was, clearly needed a foil to realize its fleshy potential. Although many of the Milner solo episodes note the excellence we’ve advance to put a question to from this series (such as the appetizing “Negate I Said I Was the Queen of Spain”, with Lois Nettleton as a woman who puts on and discards personas like clothes), others approach across as somewhat muddled and underdeveloped. For example, Stirling Silliphant apparently intended “Shall Forfeit His Dog and Ten Shillings to the King” (in which Tod joins an Arizona posse searching for a pair of killers) to be a condemnation of the vigilante mob mentality; but this is undermined by the direction which turns the episode into a standard fable of frontier justice in which the edifying guys and the dreadful guys are clearly designated. In this context, Tod’s denunciation of his fellow posse members at the episode’s conclusion makes diminutive sense.

It was positive that Milner needed a novel sidekick. Names such as Robert Duvall and Burt Reynolds were considered, but finally, in March 1963 America was introduced to Glenn Corbett as Lincoln `Linc’ Case, an Army Ranger recently returned from the Vietnam `’conflict’. Making that war a pivotal element of an American television series at a time when it composed wasn’t making front page news on US headlines marks another historical first for the series.

Glenn Corbett has gotten his radiant part of criticism from Route 66 afficianados, mainly for not being George Maharis. But Corbett and his episodes have to be and deserve to be taken on their believe terms. No Route 66 fan mourns the lamentable loss of Buz more than I do, but at the same time I glance that some of Route 66’s finest stories came with Corbett in the passenger seat, and that some of those perhaps could not have been done they plot they were with Maharis. One example is “What a Luminous Young Man Was Our Plucky Lieutenant”, which represents a highwater designate in Corbett’s tenure in terms of his performance.

The third season concludes fittingly enough with the patched-together “Soda Pop and Paper Flags”, itself emblematic of the chaos under which the explain was laboring. It was originally intended to be a Buz Murdock episode, but Maharis said his illustrious “examine ya later” unprejudiced as filming on the point to was beginning in St. Louis. Milner went ahead and filmed his possess scenes in anticipation of an eventual fresh co-star. “Soda Pop” was not completed until a couple of months later in Florida, when Corbett filmed a few scenes of his believe to accomplish the demonstrate. One thing this episode is critical for is featuring a young Alan Alda in surgical whites - a decade before the premiere of M*A*S*H and his career-defining role as Dr. “Hawkeye” Pierce.

Marc Scott Zicree once wrote of the fifth and final season of the new Twilight Zone that “if the series had primitive, it had ragged only in comparison with itself.” The same can equally and truly be said of Route 66 after the departure of George Maharis.

After the titanic quality of Route 66 Season 3 Vol 1, I inquire of no less of the 2nd volume of this season. Let’s hope we glean Season 4 entirely released in 2010 so we can have the complete situation of a spacious TV series. Thanks, Infinity!!!

There is only one reason to occupy this repackaging of these three films - ‘And Now for Something Completely Different’, which is not available in a better presentation. Both the versions of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ and ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’ are the worst possible presentations of these films available on video. In fact, ‘Baron Munchausen’ is the fist time that I have seen a wide veil film presented on DVD that was culled from a pan and scan video edition, re-framed as letterbox and then mastered to anamorphic.
